SHEQ Signs (Safety, Health, Environment & Quality)
Symbolic Signs - Mandatory, Fire Fighting & General
- A symbolic safety sign consists of a geometric shape, a colour and a picture.
- An organised system of identifying industrial hazards by easily recognisable safety signs was developed for South African conditions by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS).
Symbolic Signs - Warning & Prohibitory
- Warning signs feature a black symbol on a yellow triangle with a black border and usually warn about the presence of things like radioactivity, fire, a lighthouse, slippery steps, high voltage electricity, etc.
- Prohibitory signs feature a black symbol on a white circular background surrounded by a red circular border and with a red diagonal struck through the symbol. Typical Prohibitory signs feature a cigarette, a cell phone, a bicycle, a swimmer, a firearm, etc, each of which is a prohibited pastime or usage.
Photoluminescent Fire & Evacuation Signs
- These signs absorb light, and in the event of a power failure the signs being photoluminescent will glow in the dark. This allows personnel to easily locate evacuation routes and fire fighting equipment in the dark.
